1st Gear

Post by Wearside wanderer »

So my newly acquired ‘Hamish’ doesn’t really like 1st gear and feels like it’s in 3rd (it’s not but it wants to stall) however it loves reverse, 2nd, 3rd & 4th.
Is this a common problem or am I looking at a more serious issue, it’s been in two garages who have both been unable to solve the problem, handing me off to another garage each time without giving me a diagnosis.

It probably is in 3rd not 1st, worn linkage/set up issue
if it really is in 1st and not happy then drop the oil and see what the drainplug magnet has to tell us
where are you ?

Is it possible you have a 5 speed gearbox (perhaps without the correct gear knob )and you are not finding 1st gear.
1st gear on a 5 speed is in the dog leg position ie straight rearwards from the reverse position.maybe gently have a try and see if the lever moves into that position.
If the gearbox code is readable ( stamped near the bottom edge of the gearbox case below the reverse switch) that should identify whether 4 or 5 speed.

I was going to suggest that but I thought it was a bit too far out there so to speak

I also thought that it may be a 5 speed but discounted that as the gearknob would have given it away!
