Starter Motor - Solanoid to Motor Cable Fix ?

Post by StrathpefferVW »

1990 Autosleeper Trident 1.9 petrol 5 speed

Wife was out in the camper last night and it wouldn't start on the way back.... she managed to get a bump start as I suspected starter motor was the problem.

It looks like it is .... took it off this afternoon....the wire from the solanoid to the motor seems to have eventually given up the ghost.... as you can see from the photo .... I tried the bench test but nothing doing. I have some other old T25 starter motors which I can maybe use as wire donors.

First problem is getting into the motor body. Any tips on which screws need unding to get at the contacts end of the motor ?

I may be resigned to getting a new one from local motor parts but thought I'd try to fix first.... also seem to be sold out at Brickwerks and Justkampers atm.

Cheers and thanks in advance for any tips.

As for opening up the motor I assume its the same as the Diesel version where the outer two remove the end cap and the inner two hold the bushings in place. I am sure there is more than likely some youtube how to video on it somewhere.

Thanks... posted pic.... there are like you say 4 screws on the end.... two inner ones (which unscrew easily) don't seem to give any access to wire.... two outer flat screw head bolts causing problems to get undone.

There are the 4 big headed screws round the cylinder of the motor.... some slot head others star head.... equally stuck in place.

Anyway will try youtube again to see if any vids on there... while WD40 does it's stuff.

Post a picture of the end of the starter as well. I've not had my petrol one out or to bits so I cannot really say which ones you need to undo, I'd probably undo the lot and faff around reassembling it  . The diesel starter just had the two on the outer that came out, then the end could be removed giving access to the gubbins inside.

I do have a spare starter thinking about it so I could go dig that out tomorrow and have a looksie, but I imagine there might be others on here that could advise you on what you can do with the cable.

Managed to undo all 4 end bolts and screws, and the end bit came loose. Unfortunately the wire connection in the motor doesn't look an easy thing to replace... was hoping it was a connection like the solanoid end :-).

Lets hope the local motor parts store has the right one !
