Thanks Slowcoach,
Good news is no petrol got into sump, despite me leaving cylinders blocked up with petrol for five or more days. Oil level as before issue.
The drive home was very testing. No power below around 1500 rpm or about 1800 rev. Stalling and misfiring the whole 2H 20Mins. Or 65 miles journey of mostly motorway and dual carriageway. Especially on inclines. No power whatsoever!
Back to old skool left foot braking at junction, auto box into neutral and keeping revs up with right foot for final six miles.
Will check coil tomorrow. Have been up since 0430hrs so feeling shattered now!

Regards to all.

Sounds like you still got issues, unless you are going to say sod it and swap to carb :P

Your advice is totally sound. The problem suggested loom issue all the way.

l swapped borrowed (now purchased from Rob :ok) ECU and straight away the fuel pump did the usual prime. I then unhooked loom connector and did OHMS tests on all injectors pins 7-11, 7-12, 7-23 & 7-24 and each read around 15 ohms, so within manual spec. The only thing l cant recall after such a long day is whether l did test with ignition on or off? Or does it matter?
I then plugged loom connector back into suspect old ECU and the problem was there again. Constant running fuel pump on turn key.
Plugged back in new ECU and normal priming resumed.
At least l am moving forward. Slowly!

Is the new (ex R0B) ECU from the same engine , are there different versions ? Something to check with regards to power issues if you can’t find any other Reason ?

Hi Steve,

Rob advised me the auto version uses a different ECU to manual. The one he supplied matches the VW number on the original failed version in my van. AUTO 025 906 021E. MANUAL 025 906 021F
Camper now running fine. This morning l checked coil's primary and secondary readings and all within spec. Check ohms on coil to dizzy lead too. Very bad. Almost dead. Dug out another lead. Tested correctly at 2000 ohms per foot length? Now running well. Yet will give to local garage to reset timing and check over running values prior to pending MOT.

Regards
Stuart

BTW thanks so much for taking my calls to you when initially breaking down. Collectively we got there in the end.
So thanks again to all contributors...

Interesting failure mode.

"Camper was running beautifully beforehand. No issues whatsoever. Just failed to start when picking up my old Dad. Then stank and dripped petrol from exhaust joints. Then l noted fuel pump not stopping after split second for priming."

Then on discovery and rectification of failed ECU, it was found that the king lead was duff and now ran like an air-cooled sh'teep.

So which failure caused which? Or coincidence? Or differences between ECUs, or something else changed? Or just timing moved?

Im not that confident to precisely pinpoint the initial failure. But l reckon ECU failed first. I had no suspect misfires or lack of power. Ive always been impressed by the surge of acceleration even with autobox. Nothing changed. Just would not start again.
After plugging in the ECU from Rob l did wander whether it needed to adjust itself to my driving style and other criterias.
The failure of the coil to dizzy lead l cant comment on. All l know is l was really glad to get home. The camper was packed to the roof inside, with two bikes on the rack and towing a full trailer

Maybe the kiss of death, but in all the years I have had the van I have never had a problem with the injection system.
