Rocker valve ID

Post by Mona »

Hi All,

We took off the rocker covers today and found this, which we weren't expecting. Looking at the code 070101375B this is for a CU engine, whereas mine is a CT. Do they use the same parts? Any idea what has happened here? Is the 91 above MEXICO the year?

The V5 says the van has a CU engine, which I assumed was a mistake as it seemed weird to swap for a CT.

Thanks for any comments. There isn't a problem as such, just trying to learn about my engine.

Although..how do you take the fan cover off to turn the engine?

Cheers

Pete

The engine for reference

Yes, looking again, the CT reference was from a Chinese site so I guess a mistake.

Is the 91 above Mexico the year or something else? Just wondering if this is a 1983 engine or not.

Cheers

Hello,
Yes that is a CT.

It has had the heads replaced. They may be beetle heads, with short 13 mm sparkplugs, or CTs with 19 mm plug threads.

If it is Aircooled and has 1 carb it is a CT...2litre CU has 2 carbs.

All parts are available.

Cordialement,

:ok

Hello again.

The plastic squirrel cage pops off with 3 plastic buttons. You need a 24 mm socket to turn the motor over.

Thanks, we thought it looked like it popped off, but we didn't want to break it, in case it didn't.

We had a look at the valves today. We counted how many turns before the screw lost touch as we loosened them.

no 1  : 2 and 1.75 turns to loosen - we adjusted both to 1.75 turns
no 2  : 1.75 and 1.5 turns to loosen - we adjusted both to 1.75 turns

no 3  : 1.75 and 2.25 turns to loosen - we adjusted both to 1.75 turns  (this one was tightest)
no 4  : 1.5 and 1 turn to loosen - we adjusted both to 1.75 turns (this one was loosest)

It was hard to start and running on 3 cylinders (but really quietly), so we loosened no 4 to 1.5 turns and now it starts and runs fine, but the slight tap is back.

Is it normal to have the valves set differently, or does it point to something?

Thanks

Pete

When you reset the preload the tappets have to readjust themselves. It will run rough for a while. Best to have them all equal.
