Transporter transplant in Edinburgh

Post by BruceFerry »

Hi all. I have a lovely 1990 T3 hi-top with an overheating problem. The watercooled petrol engine has a blockage which won't shift so I'm ready for a transplant, as a cylinder head job would likely shear the head bolts.

I'd love to do this myself with expert help but I have no driveway/garage, so need a commercial garage or an enthusiast with some room for my van too.

The van also needs a body refurb and new bits inside.

Can anyone recommend a good garage (I've used a few locally who were all just not competent sadly!) or is there a knowledgable member who could help me do it? Thanks for reading.

I'm interested. Image
Firstly I'd like to dig down into what's meant by "has a blockage which won't shift"? What are the symptoms, and what's the exact diagnosis? I'm asking because if the problem turns out to be in the cooling system, any new engine could possibly be damaged.
I may be able to offer a place at Shotts to do some or all of the work, and I could certainly build you an engine, if required. Let me know if this is of any interest.
Cheers, Andrew.

Hi Andrew. Have you taken over Synchronutz from Ian McGilvery? I spent a lot of time on the van, flushed it, replaced pipes and thermostat, pump etc. and improved the compression, but concluded that there was some kind of water jacket blockage in the block which was unlikely to be repairable as the head bolts would shear. he recommended replacement but wasn't able to do the work.

The body is a bit rusty now so I'm not sure if it's worth the investment.

Can't work out how to send pics on here.

What makes you think the head bolts will shear? If it's been looked after should be OK.. but then again I guess you never know, as I found out with my build

Hi Andrew. Sorry if my text overwhelmed you; I should have summarised it.

Do you think you can help?
