Thanks again,

I've take the plate off and also found that one of the nuts was a bolt - oil starting coming out as soon as it came out.

It is on the left below.

You were right about the longer stud as well.

In addition, this round plate with a tube is sitting loose above, the ones I've seen on Youtube at least are sitting a bit higher on feet. I have probably knocked it, and the tube fits in the strainer so I can see where it fits.

There were at least 3 gaskets on each side, some fairly well stuck in.

Also, there is a crack running down the inner face of the sump...something has happened here

Looks like some bodging going on there. The pickup tube should have a bracket bolted to one of the studs inside the crankcase. The crack it think is just the join of the two halves of the crankcase.
What is this looks like a stray bolt or stud.

I'm not sure what that is, I kind of assumed it was a lump of weld or the head of the through bolt.

Should I be worried that the pickup tube (and the piece it is in) is loose and just sitting there? Would this account for the rattle?

or maybe that bolt that went all the way through was to hold it down?

The oil pick up should not be loose best to find out what is going o and what that loose part is.
This is how it is fixed to the case. Part 40.

Thanks again, I would never have been able to locate that drawing.

I wonder if the through bolt in my plate has been adapted for use as part 39? It is in a similar position. Is there a drawing showing where 39 is?

Thanks

Pete

39 is one of the sump plate studs that is longer and screws further through the case.

Ahhhh....

None of the videos or instructions I have seen mentioned that.

Using this one I assume? how is the part kept in place while the stud is being put in?

So the thing I thought was a long bolt is actually a threaded bar with the nut stuck on the end? and the bar has been removed (by me) along with the nut. The threaded bar shouldn't have come out. So I've got parts 41 and 42 loose somewhere in the sump. Is that right.

About right, although the nut must have been loose or missing because it would normally have locked the stud in place.

Update. Eventually we just over-bodged the bodge and added a dab of weld to the broken weld to keep the oil sender pipe assembly in place.

It seems to have helped as the oil pressure light isn't coming on any more, apart from when it is supposed to.
