petrol leak

Post by Mona »

Hi All,

The van passed its MOT today with no advisories. I celebrated by putting 50 litres in the tank, which started leaking just after getting home. I've read this is pretty common in old vans and it seems a good opportunity to replace all of the fuel lines.

One question - if I need a new tank, is it worth getting the newer version and a plastic filler pipe, or should I stick with the early tank and pipe?

Van in half-painted state for interest. Am wondering about painting the front and back, and leaving the sides for now as a kind of anti-theft device.

leak is most likely to be the breather hoses so see what you find when you have drppped the tank
nice art :D , distinctive so may well act as deterrent

This is not mine but provides a great guide to fuel tank replacement and breather hoses: https://vwt25.blog/2016/05/03/replacing-the-fuel-tank/

Don’t forget the new rubbers bungs in the top and use non perishable fuel hose for this connections as the cheap braided stuff rots in no time. It’s not that complicated to take out but helps to have either a scissor jack or trolly with some wood to spread the load

If it does need a new tank, buy the later tank with a new smaller filler neck. The tanks are poor quality and don't line up with the hole in the chassis well. The smaller diameter filler allows more wiggle room.
