Pierburg 2E Carburettor

Post by Dave Mason »

Hi all

1987 1.9dg Pierburg 2E Carburettor
The automatic choke is stuck.
The engine runs ok, but difficult to start.

Is this an easy fix ?
Or look for a reconditioned full unit ?
Or an alternative carburettor?

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks....

Hi ajsimmo
Many thanks for your reply.
The engine runs fine, just extremely difficult to start.
I've Identified that the Automatic choke isn't working.

What I'm asking.... Is it best to get a new unit or try to fix a 34 year old Obsolete Pierburg ??
Is it possible to replace the automatic choke with a manual choke ?
Or is there a replacement automatic choke for the Pierburg 2E Carburettor?
My carb is a 2e , do you know if a 2e3 replacement will fit straight on ?

I've found a replacement carb for a waterboxer, would this fit ?

Ok, firstly i would advise you not to go for the Brosal copy. They are not very reliable, the build quality is suspect, and sometimes they give trouble from new straight out the box. I've returned a couple, and now don't use or recommend them.
The better option by far is a complete refurbishment by Roger at Bromyard VW.

But, before all that, the choke is a simple mechanism, and you say you've identified that it's not working. What have you found? And i mean more specifically than just "it's not working", but more like, for example, what the choke flap gap is when closed, that you've tested the pull-down unit, the heater element has failed, the actuator rod has come adrift etc etc.

Once again thanks for your reply ajsimmo
To be honest, the carb is still on the vehicle. I've not stripped it down as I didn't want the vehicle not to be able to move.
Just that the flap is stuck open .
I'm thinking now that i should buy a used Pierburg 2E Carburettor and refurbish it, so it'll be a case of a straight change over ?
Does it matter if the automatic choke casing is much different ?
Do you know how do I attach photos on here ?
Thanks
Dave

Definitely go for the Bromyard rebuild - it's worth every penny! Our van was like a new vehicle as soon as the rebuilt carb had been fitted - instant starting, better fuel consumption, smoother acceleration, sailed through the emissions testing - and that was on a DG with 140,000 miles on the clock.

that doesn't look like a T25 2E3 to me, is that your carb ? What is the VW part number stamped on it, and or the Pierburg part number ?
VW number should be 025 129 015, possibly with a letter after the 015

This is my carb showing the choke in the "Stuck Open " position.
ajsimmo
I've just taken the side cover housing off with the bimetallic spring. The Bimetallic Spring was under tension. Would that cause it to stick open?
{The small electric spring coil heater inside the housing} The white insulation rings seem to move, could this cause the choke to stay open?
Is the small electric spring coil heater a replacement part ? Does anyone have a link to where I could purchase from ?

Where is the actuator rod ? I've googled it but can't find any reference to it ?
I've not tested the "Pull Down Unit" How do i do this ?
How do I test if the heating element is working ?
I can't test to see if the gap is correct, as it was stuck in the open position.
My carb is a VW/AU 025 129 015 H *? 6 315

Thanks
Dave

Hi all, I'm still having trouble with starting.
I've watched all the videos on YouTube, but still can't get the choke to close.
Someone else has suggested that the vacuum lines should be changed, as if they are leaking it won't allow the choke to close.
The only way I can get the choke flap to close, is rotate the Bimetallic spring housing to the right , past the existing mark , and then the holes won't line up at all for the bolts..
Any ideas please 🤔

The choke flap should close with the engine cold and not running, so it can't be a vacuum hose issue.  Has the choke shaft just got badly gummed up so the bimetallic spring isn't strong enough to pull it closed? With the choke pulled to one side so the the bi metallic spring isn't connected, it should be east to pull flip the choke flap closed with light finger pressure.

Another thought; have you checked that the pin from the choke shaft is actually properly located into the end of the spring, and not just pushing against it?

The metal link arm could be disconnected or the plastic connection could be broken?
Also that fuel hose going into the carb needs renewing, it's split and also duse the correct fuel pipe clips than those ones as they have a tendancy to oval out.

Also, wheres the return line to the fuel tank, not seeing it on the carb anywhere, or am I blind...
