Not idling at all
Hi,
For a brief intro my van has just come back from the garage as it cut out on me a few months back, I swapped the distributor cap, rotor arm, spark plugs, HT leads, coil, turns out it was the ignition module that went. Anyway the guy had a fun time setting the timing on my engine as for some reason something when fitted by the previous owner was fitted wrong and it was firing on cylinder 3 rather than 1. All sorted and the van was running again.
Bit of back story the van would always stall out when first started, i'd have to keep the revs on until warm so it would idle. It has now however after a few drives post being at the garage decided to just stall all the time even when warm if I drop my foot off the revs. I've been checking for vacuum leaks and replaced the two hoses off the back of the carb as they looked quite worn. This hasn't fixed the issue. Is there any hidden hoses I should be checking which would cause this? I am going to try cleaning the carb out and see if this sorts the issues.
I have a lot of trouble locating things in my engine bay. it's the 1.9 DG for extra info. If anyone has any pictures of where things are that mat be causing problems that would be amazing.
I'm sorry for starting a topic on none idling issues as I know these come about a lot but I was just wondering if my backstory would give anyone a bit of an inkling as to where things might be going wrong.

Just for a bit of info, it was running rough when driving for the first 10 minutes or so until completely warm. Sound like carb issues?

Sounds like the choke. Maybe it isn't set right, I had something similar on my van.
Maybe could be a blocked idle jet if the choke is OK.
Also do you depress the accelerator pedal once before cold starts to reset the choke / fast idle?

Ahh Ill clean out the jet first and if not look at setting the carb back up. I only sometimes do that but it never seems to make a difference.

I'd take the pancake off the carb, go and push the accelerator pedal once all the way down once and go check to see where the choke flap is sitting. If its closed completely then you need to adjust it. Pretty sure the wiki has info on basic setup.
Just to clarify, you have the pierburg carb and not something like an aftermarket webber?

Feel the pain. Just went through same issues. Got lots of really good help on here. Summary below.
Here’s the post anyway but lots of other good threads worth reading on here too.
Is it a Pierburg? If not don’t waste your time reading...

This is what I tried:
- check wiring to distributor. One wire was about to break. Fixed but didn’t help idle, apparently it can.
- check fuel filter cone. Line in from pump. Need a screw to pull it out. Mine was clogged. Didn’t help much but good to do it.
- check the return to the tank. Apparently if that’s not clear it can flood.
- worth checking quality of fuel lines while you’re at it and that they are new/ethanol proof ones. Sure there is a lot written about this too.
- check all vac hoses. There are a few In and out and to the two pull down units. Mine looked ok nic but when I bent them while testing the cracks opened up. Particularly on the bits near the carb, guess they get hotter? Best to replace Anyway as they are cheap. Get good clips too if fit isn’t tight.
- as above choke setting could be out. I spend a long time playing with this. Also check it’s seated properly as mine was a bit out. You never know.
- take air intake off and remove idle jet. Mine was a bit clogged on top. Blasted with carb cleaner.
- check mixture screw. Mine was too rich even though emissions passed at garage. I think this is what mainly caused the issue for me.

Thanks for the reply’s guys, just to update!
I took out the idle screw and blew carb cleaner down it and carb cleaner all over inside the carb / on the choke valve. Started up first time and idled great on choke too which it’s not done since I bought it!

I know how hard it is finding out the solutions, hate when you get to a post and it doesn’t have a resolution at the end!

Your timing lead error is a classic engine rebuild fault: timing gear 180° out, so all the leads move round two positions.

Why not just pull the dizzy drive out and install it correctly?

If I ever had to do that I could see myself dropping one or both of the washers into the case.
