CU air in fuel filter

Post by Funkychops »

Hi

I'm after some info as to whether this is normal (see photo) or whether the system should be free from air. Does this suggest an air leak in the fuel line, or do I not need to worry?

2L CU engine

Thanks

The hose and hose clip on the right appear to be distorted - could allow air ingress, looks like the hose needs pushing on to the spigot fully. ( most probably 2 differing diameters on the filter and the smallest used for some reason or wrong size hose)
Hose is only R6 which is frowned upon today, I use R14 for petrol Webastos.

No reason why it should be. Once you have filled it then fitted it there is no reason, other than an air leak, why air should collect to that extent. The filter should slope upwards at the outlet to allow any air to pass out of the system also.

How would the air get out ? The pipes are in the middle so there will always be air in there , there’s no way for it to escape

That type of filter is supposed to be mounted vertically or as close as possible! Obvious really.

it’s supposed to be angled , but the air still wouldn’t have any way to escape

Vertically means straight up!
Yes, the air will escape. It has done for the last 50 years that I know of and I can't see that it will stop now just because you say so.

That's how my filter looks. As far as I know, it's the correct filter in the right place 8)

Don't worry about the air, that's normal, but do be worried about the R6 fuel hose. Replace with ethanol safe cohline hose from Brickwerks is my top tip.
