Although the MOT man was happy and it didnt even make it to a warning,
I have been told by someone that I should think of reconditioning my rack.
It doesnt seem to be available as a new item, who would I go to?
I'm told theres a bit of play on the drivers side.

Could the play just be on the inner knuckle on the track rod?

Evening
I had my RHD power steering rack fully refurbished by Power Racks Direct in Mountsorrel, Leicestershire.
Fantastic service and rack back as new. I'd 100% recommend.
Cheers

It uses the same seals as a Beemer E30 afaik. Very similar rack design ;)

That is worth investigating, as its the play they were worried about,
not any leaks, and only play on one side too..
I'm not clear, are you suggesting just that part could be changed?
They seemed to want to replace the whole thing,
but that is often the way with (normal garage) mechanics these days,
more like fitters than mechanics.. replace rather than mend.

This item:

I’d assume wear in the rack would transmit to both sides. The inner knuckles are just a ball and cup set up as far as I’m aware and very easy to change the whole track rod to eliminate play. Got to be worth a go. I have several spare racks here I could post a genuine arm out to try. PM me if you want one.

Thanks for that, I've ordered a new track rod now,
its in for a new bearing on that side next week,
so a good time to sort it.

Hopefully that’ll be the culprit then.
Syncro wheel bearings are not my favorite job. I have both rumbling on the front and I’ve been putting it off!
