1981 hub carrier thread
Currently restoring my 1981 2.0l Aircooled and rebuilding front suspension steering and brakes. The splash plates have dissappeared so while trying to replace them i removed the hub and noticed the thread on the stub axle looks very worn. The bearings were not giving any cause for concern and the hub nut was tight but not sure how when i look at the thread. Will try and post a picture but as this is my first post have not worked out how to do this yet!

Nothing but a sign in to something called google drive request on that link!
I very much doubt that the thread is worn, it isn't very much thread as only has to cover this shiny thread in the nut.

Re: 1981 hub carrier thread
Someone has overtightened hub bearing retaining nut. The torque setting is very low. In fact so minimal that the washer is almost loose. This allows for expansion or because its a tapered bearing.

Re: 1981 hub carrier thread
You have only lost about 1/2 a thread of 5 - all that that has been mullered by being forced off with the peening still in place plays no part in the retention of the nut as once the nut is correctly peened those outer threads serve no purpose as the shape is distorted.
But I am not so sure about the bottom area of this view as there is some mess there that I can't make out clearly:

Re: 1981 hub carrier thread
That hasn't been overtightened, the working threads are intact except for the last 1/2 a thread.

In some part l agree OBG. However for washer lug to sit in cutout it cannot possibly go to end of thread.

Re: 1981 hub carrier thread
In fact, you can see where washer lug or tab has been forced beyond and damaged thread.
Ill stick with over-tightening

Re: 1981 hub carrier thread
There isn't any thread where the washer goes - it goes under the nut and sits on the unthreaded portion. The slot continues a long way past the threads.( the washer slot is at the bottom)

Yep, my mistake. Looking at peening slot and not washer groove..

Re: 1981 hub carrier thread
Thanks guys, seems like i might be ok which is good because i cannot find a replacement anywhere! I have taken two more photos one of each side but this tine from underneath to help with the discussion about peening slots and thrust washer slot.

Re: 1981 hub carrier thread
Another photo showing thrust washer slot which is on the side and does go way past the peening slots. Seems like the comment about the nut being removed without unpeening first is favourite for explaining the thread damage.
