Another photo showing thrust washer slot which is on the side and does go way past the peening slots. Seems like the comment about the nut being removed without unpeening first is favourite for explaining the thread damage.
Just need to get those three splash guard screws out now after i chiselled off the remains of the guard, going to use; patience, heat, penetrating fluid and a little hammer over a few days and a vice grip on the outside of the screw. If that fails i am down to drilling out the screws and retapping or i will grind down the head and tack weld the new guard in position. In the future tack welds will be much easier to remove than these screws!!!

Thanks guys, seems like i might be ok which is good because i cannot find a replacement anywhere! I have taken two more photos one of each side but this tine from underneath to help with the discussion about peening slots and thrust washer slot.

Currently restoring my 1981 2.0l Aircooled and rebuilding front suspension steering and brakes. The splash plates have dissappeared so while trying to replace them i removed the hub and noticed the thread on the stub axle looks very worn. The bearings were not giving any cause for concern and the hub nut was tight but not sure how when i look at the thread. Will try and post a picture but as this is my first post have not worked out how to do this yet!
Phil, was it you that unscrewed the nut? If so, did you 'un-peen' it before unscrewing it?

Why? All the working threads are there. No more needed, certainly not all those in the peening slot zone.
There’s 4 ok threads , not good, just ok, the rest are toast, the nuts been over tightened and the nuts also been forced onto the damage thread at some point, screwing a new nut on will just damage the new nut and the remaining poor thread, from the not great pictures I would say the remaining 4 threads have around 2/3 of there original height left, if it has a die run down it to tidy up the thread most of the thread will be gone as it rolled down the stub
tobydog Yes i unscrewed both sides and unpeened both nuts before unscrewing. One side is not as bad as the other, i am going to reassemble and see how the nut goes back on and how secure it feels, any doubts and i will replace the hub carrier, if i can get hold of one!?
Perhap the nut was used to force outer bearing in to place. Will likely get a mental kicking for saying this; l have never un-peened the retaining nut. Never had any issues like that.
