Digifant lump replace with Digijet

Post by maverickMechanic »

Hi

I have a 2.1 Digifant in my 1990 Syncro. The engine has done 150K miles and whilst it runs well it is fairly tired. I have been offered a 2.1 Digijet engine, from a standard 2WD Van it was a recon unit and only done 800 miles.

Anyone know if I could swap the main lump over. Then moving the parts accross. Not sure exactly what would need to move over apart from the distributor.

It has an exhaust sytem on it but I am fairly certain this will need to be replaced as the syncro is pretty different.

Any advice gratefully received.

The main mechanical difference MV > DJ is the compression ratio. I suspect this might be show-stopper as far as swapping the 'lump' over and keeping all else the same, but others far better informed than myself on such things will be along soon I hope. Personally I would swap over the whole engine-management if swapping those lumps.

If they are both DJ's keep the digifant it's a later system.

A DJ will run well on digifant, and should be a bit more economical too.

Cool ! That's good to know ! How do you set the ignition timing in that setup ?

The workshop manual has the timing on 28-9, If they are both DJ's they should have the same timing so he shouldn't need to mess with anything as long as the engine he's putting in has the timing set correct? Swapping the distributor should be the only thing you need to do I woulda thought between Digijet and Digifant.
At least from what I've checked, probably missed some cruical paragraph

They're not both DJs, it's digifant so is originally an MV or SS. The exhaust will need to be swapped as it needs the lambda probe for digifant to work. Copy the timing mark off the MV pulley, mark it on the DJ pulley (or swap pulleys), and time it the same. You'll effectively have a high compression MV. The engine management will look after timing and mixture, but if you run it on Super unleaded you'll be able to tweak the base timing forward 3-5° for the extra oomph.

Thanks for this and yes to confirm my original Syncro lump is an MV. The donor lump is a DJ. My MV does not have the CAT anymore long rusted away but it has a bypass pipe with the Lamda sensor bossed in. So just swapping the exhaust bits, distritbutor plus airbox and any specific coolant bits and we should be good.
