Cant select 1st or reverse...

Post by crazyhorse »

Hi guys, hoping for some help.

I changed the gearbox oil a week ago. Nightmare of a job.. (different story)

I couldnt get the filler plug off so I took the selector lever and mounting plate off so the rod dropped down and I had enough room.

Put evrything back on all was well. Drove the van fine for a few days, but all of a sudden I couldnt get it into 1st, second was tight but just about managed and third and fourth were fine.

Today I couldnt get into reverse at all so had to push the van out of a car park space in Tesco... Very embarassing. No chance of getting into first, when I move it to where first is I always get third, and second is fourth. I can just about get second and third and forth are fine...

Where to begin here... do I need to make an adjustment in the middle of the linkage??

I changed my gearbox oil a few months back, was tempted to do what you did for access but managed it without undoing any linkages, just looked on line and there is a lot of bushes and linkages between the gear stick and the gearbox housing maybe these have been affected.  Is there anyway that when you move the gearstick to select gears somebody else can have visibility of the linkage/linkages to view what is happening, it may give some pointers to where the problem lies.

When you took the linkage bracket off the gearbox body to allow you to drop the linkage off , did you note which side of the seam on the gearbox it was ? It’s 10mm difference , and makes a big difference to the set up of the linkage

It should be on the front side , nearest the front of the van .

The nut that holds the ball onto the gearbox selector ?
Did you undo it to take the linkages off?

done similar on saturday when i changed my gearbox, put the gear selector bracket on the wrong side of the gearbox mounting holes, consequently i only had 1st and 3rd gear, back on ramps and moved it to the forward side of the gearbox mounting and low and behold all the gears came back..what a dummy  :rofl
