Gain or just pain?

Post by sump »

Should I or not? That is to just replace the faulty pipe in the exhaust system or change it all for SS or mild steel?

Is there any gain in HP with one or the other?

At present it has an early system so is there any gain by going for the later one?

Obviously SS is more expensive and the cheapest option is to just replace one or two bits and hopefully the ret will last another couple of years or so.

I'm sure this must be a  question that's been on loads of peoples minds at one time or another.

I just bit the bullet and bought a full S/S system as I never intend to sell my van.

Exactly if you intend to keep go for the best option, mine came with an SS system, at least the silencer appears to be SS.  Maybe worth investigating how much work is involved, ie removal of bolts from cylinder heads etc and other tricky areas.

Yes I agree that as a long term investment it makes sense to pay more now for something that will last but what I really want to know is, is it better performance wise?

Meant to be better performance from what I recall people saying, but it's on a T25.. so..

.....So...Isn't it even more important to gain every extra BHP that's available?

Exhausts are the final aftermarket part for increased performance in my opinion.
Beforehand check compression and carb condition. Give it to a tuning expert with knowledge of pierberg carbs. Even ungraded steering and suspension components, or a laser all wheel tracking service can help inprove performance.

I guess but torque would make more sense than BHP. The previous owner of my van had installed a speedshop exhaust if I recall, been on there a few years at least. A marginal increase is better than nothing I guess, but I woulda thought you'd be looking at single digit figures.

Sub five too. Any increase in torque or BHP will reduce MPG. So might as well go LPG conversion.
However if you you are after power go Subaru. 3k plus final price. Or drive within means of camper and spend that money camping

:rofl

Sorted I think! Ordered a MS manifold and J pipe for No.1 and coper nuts so should do the job for a few more years I hope :!:

Cost a lot less anyway £160 instead of almost £600 so I figured if I end up doing the other side in say 2 or 3 years time I'll still be quids in and when the silencer goes as well which is only 4 years old at the Mo. I"ll change the lot then.

Just got to get the bottom stud out of No 1 which has sheared off, of course

The tin wear is different for later vans, so you'd haver to cut slots in it and change the engine mounting bar to hold the exhaust brackets early vans don't have.

Good point :!: hadn't thought about any of that. So looks like I made the right choice :?:

All back together now. Had to have that B*****d stud drilled out and Helicoiled at vast expense but at least it's now fixed again

That is until something else goes wrong oh and there is still the gear linkage which needs tweaking after changing all the gubins! :rofl
