SP vs DG

Post by zoona »

I thought I had a DG engine - turns out it is SP.

All I can find out if that it is some sort of quieter/more efficient (?) version of the DG, with even less power.
The Swiss really know how to make things boring.

Can anybody point me to some more info about the differences?

There ya go champ, that might help you out.. I think from my brief readings when going through engine stuff for my build, SP have a different cam in them and were swiss only for emission regulations?. But I've read so much stuff recently on these subjects it's coming out my ears in an unorganised fashion.

Thanks for the reply.

I've seen pages like this, but wanted to understand the differences mechanically, so I don't but the wrong parts...

Ah fair enough, well I assume it's just different internals. Cannot recall if my VW bibles have anything about it, but I honestly haven't looked as I don't have an SP. I think one of the more seasoned could help you!

If it remember correctly it’s basically a DF with DG heads , I’ve only even seen one , many years ago and it was a non runner we bought for breaking . It may have been messed with , but it’s engine number was SP . Looked like a DG carb on a DG manifold but I seem to remember it had more pipework , more vac pipes and a charcoal carbon filter thing .

It's basically a DG with maybe some emission (hydrocarbon) controls on it, uses the same heads and same cams, same carbs, same electronics, only built between 1986 and 1989 and only just over 4000 built; you can treat it as being a DG; from the parts catalogue it is hard to see how it is de-rated by 4hp, maybe VW were telling porkies to the Swiss   maybe they just timed it slightly differently to pass some test ?
