Petrol leak near filler pipe.

Post by Ciaraneng »

I smelled some fumes near the driver side door shortly after filling and found this. Is it a fact of life if you overfill or is it something that needs urgent repair? Is it a tank out job?

new seal probably, the neck will have to come off but you won't have to drop the tank, unless you find the tanks rusted out.

It's an early van with a 70mm seal. Can these be changed without dropping the tank?

Wouldn't know sadly, I have a later plastic filler with the smaller seal.
I would think so, but maybe someone else with more knowledge could chime in.

I guess the way to find out would be to take your filler off and see  :ok

Thanks Stesaw :ok

Advice from an early van owner who has encountered this would be appreciated.

I dropped my tank out recently (early van) because it was seeping along the seam all the way round. Yours does look like a leak from the filler seal, but it's hard to totally diagnose the leak site due to the way the petrol seeps all over the place (something to do with surface tension I expect...)

I can't imagine how you could change the filler seal without dropping the tank unless you have very small and flexible hands, as you'll have to get round that chassis member. Might be worth a try first though. First step is to remove the filler pipe, which is just a push fit into the tank seal.

If it's any consolation, I did a tank changeover in one evening so it's not too hard. Having said that, it's certainly not a fun job... Good luck

Thanks Funkychops.

I suspect I over-filled it and just had petrol slowly seeping out of a full fill pipe. I'll keep an eye on it and drop the tank if I see it seeping again.
