Is there any play up and down in the pulley as in "worn bearing" which could let the pulley run at an angle? Have you checked the alignment of the pump. If the belt is consistently running off to one side then either the adjuster or the pump pulley must be out of true. The crank, and both cam pulleys are not really capable of this, as pointed out earlier by Davidoft1.

Where is the adjuster on these pumps, is it the one where the fuel lines come out at the bottom..??

This is the fixing at the back of the pump that you'll have to slacken, plus the eight pipe union nuts, and the three fixings at the front of the pump, in order to rotate it to set the timing. The trick is to get everything tightened up in the right place, without imposing any strain on the main mounting plate.

ok i have checked all the bolts and none have any movement marks around them and im still unsure how undoing these bolts pushes out or brings in the pulley wheel as once you tighten them back up it will butt back up against the mounting bracket again, plus i think i have read to much about this aswell and am frying my brain a little, however the line at the top front of the injection pump is still inline with the engine mark aswell. I have a second hand injection pump coming in the next few days, so i am going to place that one on and see how the cam belt acts when i turn the crank by hand, only because i am still convinced its the bearing inside the pump that is causing this, as i reckon there is far to much play.  With the Cam lock in position and belt off, i can move the pulley wheel about too much, i have checked also the stud that holds the tensioner and that is not bent neither.

steveo9007 wrote: 03 Sep 2020, 14:35 Yep, just managed to source a second hand [pump], its the same one that was fitted to the 1.6CS engine as well so should be good to go once i get it.

The pump may be the same pattern, but I would have thought it would have different settings on the 1.6 and 1.7 engines. If you put a CS pump on, it will only inject enough fuel for a 1.6
It should run OK, but will only produce similar power to a CS. No smoke though!
You could probably get a diesel specialist to increase the fuelling, but the details of that are beyond my knowledge.

Just seen your latest.
Slackening the fixings for the pump just allow you to rotate it to get the timing right. The pulley position is fixed, and the belt will find its own position provided the pulley is running true.
Sleep on it. It will all be clear in the morning :D

I only mentioned about it being the same as the 1.6CS cos this German Website sell it as that, this is refurbished of course but they say both engines ??

I've got a CS pump here (20K miles since refurb) that you can have for £200. But I don't think it's what you need.

That’s what I have just bought from someone, came from a running engine so will give that one a go first and see what happens. If I get no belt tracking I’m good, if I get belt tracking then I am going down the route of another engine maybe the 1Y if I can get one. Defo going to stay diesel. And I don’t really want to be putting too much money into this KY engine when there maybe a better solution out there for me in the long run. 👍

Good plan.
If you fit the pump and all is OK with the belt, you could then take it to someone like City Auto Diesel in Plymouth (Not your ordinary mechanic!) to set up the fuelling correct for your engine. City Auto Diesel are the only company I use to rebuild and set up my injection pumps.

Ahh my home town is plymouth, i will definitely do that, just wondering when i take off my old unit if its worth getting it refurbed, wonder what sort of figure they will have to do that, then i will kinda have a spare in case.

So update to this problem, I found out that the bearings in my injection pump had worn, probably due to an overtightened cambelt, anyway looking around on tinternet and happened to get lucky with someone selling a KY Injection pump that had only been refurbed 18 months ago, happy days. The bottom is the refurbed pump.

Image
Fitted it in place making sure it was lined up and all went well

Fitted Cambelt making sure that the belt was not over tighten, i was able to make a quarter twist in the belt between the tensioner and crank, and between the cam and injection pump pulley wheel. Removed Cam Lock and Injection pump locking pin and made 2 full revolutions by hand to make sure the cam, injection pump and TDC timing mark on flywheel lined up and that the belt had no more wandering on it.

All was good, so went for a start with the key and the result was a success.

Obviously help was found in various places, Bentley Manual, Small JK Diesel engine Manual, The Wiki, and Facecrook aswell. :ok :rollin
