Difference between pulling an auto and manual engine
Im rebuilding a DG 1.9 from a manual camper. This will act as a temporary engine while l pull the 2.1 auto in my camper at present.
Apart from all the usual...l done two T25 manual engine removals...is there any difference? Does the auto flexplate stay gearbox side automatically? Ive read the engine needs turning over to get to each flex bolt?
Any tips appreciated before l proceed in the next few weeks please?
Regards
Stuart

Re: Difference between pulling an auto and manual engine
Yes, you need to turn the engine by 120° between bolts (3 to do), and I use a 1/2" AF socket instead of a 13mm as it's a snug fit and will grip the bolt head instead of dropping it into the bell housing!
The flex plate stays on the engine (in place of a flywheel).

Thank you. What keeps the flex plate attached to the engine?
I need to set up end float too. I dont have a spare flex plate. Can I use a manual flywheel? Is it the same procedure for auto and manual?

Re: Difference between pulling an auto and manual engine
Yes. Flexplate is fixed to crank with 5 Allen socket head stretch bolts, same as flywheel. Although each will need shimming to suit - two flywheels or flex plates may not be the same. I just had one in that had 5 shims in! Replaced the flywheel with a reground one and took out two shims to get 0.1mm endfloat.
Also check oil seal running surface for grooving, if it's bad it may need fixing with a speedisleeve.

Re: Difference between pulling an auto and manual engine
The flex plate is essentially the flywheel, you must set the end float with the flywheel/ flex plate you are going to use , different flywheels/ flex plates will give different endfloat so you can’t set it with one and swap to another as the endfloat will change
Re: Difference between pulling an auto and manual engine
Okay and thanks very much for good info. All noted in my book
So no point setting end float until l remove the 2.1 and transfer flex plate to the 1.9. Then same routine when swapping back again after 2.1 rebuild.
