Warm up time 1.9dg

Hi,

What should the warm up time be for this engine?
Mine seems to take age..!!
It wouldn’t surprise me if there was no thermostat fitted, but before taking things apart though would ask what is normal..

Mine on initial start up from cold and stationary takes about 5 to 10 minutes depending on outside temperature, keeping an eye on the temperature gauge a gentle tap on the accelerator pedal during this period, reduces the revs allowing the vehicle to idle normally.

Time to change the thermostat.. although I know they nearly always fail closed, I suspect mine has been removed.. the P.O loved to reengineer stuff ..

Have you tested temperature on either side of thermostat or at the feed pipes to the radiator, I would imagine if no thermostat was not  fitted the feed pipe would become warm sooner.  Also what does temperature gauge show.

Gauge takes an age to move.. could be a sender fault of course.. have an IR temp checker, so might do that..
Heater also takes an age to warm ( know that isn’t thermostat controlled).
Thermostat seems an easy change...

I have a new water pump to fit as well, but seems that’s not that straightforward!!

My 2.1 DJ WBX temp gauge creeps up progressively but the heater starts blowing hot quite suddenly three or four miles after I start a journey - slightly quicker if I am purposefully making for the motorway.  Without thinking too much about it I just assumed that was  when the thermostat woke/warmed up and took control of the thermal management so to speak.

Someone correct me if I am wrong but I believe a wax thermostat will normally fail closed so causing an overheat. Which might result in a PO get you home bodge i.e. removal. Or that equally naughty PO could have removed it to solve an overheating fault. Worth investigating depending on your idea of a long time.

I had to change my water pump shortly after buying my camper, a squeaky belt tempted me to tighten it which in turn damaged the water pump.  Mine I found a bit of a fuss to change as I had to disconnect other piping to remove it, I have heard that later 1.9dg have a different water pump removal system which is supposed to be more straightforward.  If you list the year of your vehicle it will aid members replies.

My DG takes 4 to 5 miles to reach centre of temp gauge even with 80 degree thermostat.
which i prefer to the standard even in winter it reaches full temperature quickly.

Is it a full drain down to remove ( or in my case add I think) the thermostat..
Tempted to leave as it is until after the weeks holiday..
Fingers crossed she will be okay, knowing my luck will sort the thermostat ( warm up speed ) and then maybe find the reason it was removed.. lol

Maybe worth taking the spare parts and tools you think you will need with you, in case a repair becomes necessary.  If temperature ok and there are no symptoms of overheating I would also be tempted to leave until later. Keep an eye on coolant levels etc.

Mine is blowing warm air through the heater within a mile and the gauge is up within 4 miles . 
a temp on the loud pedal after about a minute drop the revs down to about 1000 and a further tap a min or so later drop to normal tickover of 850 

you shouldn’t need to do a full drain down to change a thermostat, just lift the a*** up  let the pressure out and Catch the two or three letters that will come out ( less if you can clamp the headertank pipes ) 
the real struggle is the thermostat housing top bolts not being rusty and spinning the inserts in the thermostat housing body rather than undoing . Plus gas plenty for a couple of days prior or trying I would say

The P.o assured me there is a thermostat in there.. I’m now thinking caput water pump....

If the water pump was not pumping the engine would heat up faster surely ?
