Just interest in knowing what you ended up doing in the end ?

Yep, I realised by your calculations I was twisting way too far!

Clearly that plastic thing that shifts the spark to maintain the idle was working it's socks off (as I was twisting the dizzy). It probably has a 0.5Mhtz processor....

In the end I took the cover off the engine so could listen for pinking, on a journey

If you mean the idle stabilisation unit on the left wing (not sure if a 2.1DJ normally has those) , then you unplug the connections and join them together to defeat it.
