4 speed gearbox housing mystery
Evening
I’m trying to rectify a very loose gear change so tonight removed the housing to replace the guide blocks.
I think someone has bodged this previously as I have a mysterious bit of plastic stuck to the inner wall:
First question is... is this a bodge and secondly should it look like this:
Cheers

Re: 4 speed gearbox housing mystery
what year is it ?
the second one you picture is built August 1982 onwards, watercooled, 83 model year onwards
prior to that the plate was different, and was basically a piece of nylon and the linkage was bare metal

Thanks Aidan.
It’s a 2.0 Aircooled 1981 van.
Upon further investigation the plastic/nylon isn’t a bodge, it’s a genuine VW part, so I assume the housing is correct from what you say?

Re: 4 speed gearbox housing mystery
the housing stayed the same but instead of the plastic guide held on by moulded lugs we got the aluminium guide held with M6 bolts
there's some useful threads on the Samba about repairing the earlier one with the thickness of material information

Re: 4 speed gearbox housing mystery
Could you be kind enough to point me in the direction of that info please?

Re: 4 speed gearbox housing mystery
strange, if I do it I get this
and if I click through on the first picture it takes me to the thread entitled Shift Guide, Gearshift lever stop plate. 81 Vanagon 4spd.
Re: 4 speed gearbox housing mystery
I meant before you told me the part number.
I kept searching ‘4 speed vw linkage’ and all I got was water cooled stuff and couldn’t find diagrams of my linkage. After using the part number to search and find some schematics I’ve now realised I’m missing a few other bits and my gear stick is a bit bent

Re: 4 speed gearbox housing mystery
nice one; I'm not familiar with the air-cooled stuff, as I only work on the water-cooled boxes, but you may find that Mick at VW NW can sort you out with anything that you are missing
if you put up a wanted he usually drops in once a week and reads through those and someone else may have what you need

Re: 4 speed gearbox housing mystery
Well it’s all back on with new bushes, guides, greased and with a new stick mechanism from brickwerks and it’s definitely not like stirring paint anymore.
It’s still not ‘right’ though. Intermittently it’s tricky to go into gear. I reckon I’m 50% better than I was but I’m not happy yet
I’m assuming the issue now lies further towards the gearbox....
I’m going to follow the wiki and see how I get on
