Starting problem

Post by adrian1975 »

Hi all, it's been a while I hope all are well

The problem I have is-

1.9 late dg, I have to press the acc pedal before starting hot or cold just the once and she will run fine, if I don't press the acc pedal she will turn over but not fire , the battery will then go flat, i have checked the fuel pump push rod at 99.8mm, I've ordered a new one to see if it makes a difference, but i can't see it being the problem, manual test of the pump seems ok but not 100% sure ,

Any help appreciated

From cold the accelerator pedal should be depressed fully once then released, then turn the engine over, from hot a slight touch to the accelerator on turning the engine over should start it, it works for me.  There have been a couple of posts recently regarding this but I believe that is the recommended starting procedure.

Assume you have a Pierburg carb?

Cold start should always depress the clutch once to get it going, as for hot starts I've never had to touch the accel pedal to start mine.
Could be something like fuel filter needs replacing or a blocked carb jet, check your carb cone filter as well see if it needs cleaning out...that is if you have one.

Yes pierburg, if I don't press the acc pedal it won't start then I have to mess around with fuel pump pipe, I think it runs on the choke fuel when I press the acc pedal and then the pump takes over once running, if I don't press the acc pedal at any stage it won't start,

I can't even start again, so key off press acc pedal restart, it's once or never

Firstly , if your battery won’t allow you to crank the engine more than one go , the battery is knackered !

from cold , as has been said above, get in, press the pedal to the floor firmly , lift foot off , turn the key , it should spin over No more than 3 cycles and be started .
from hot, get in, press pedal to floor, nd lift off half way , turn key  whence it has started take foot off .

when you park up , there should be enough fuel in the carb to re start it even if the fuel pump isn’t pumping at all , at least enough for it to fire to kick the starter out , although much longer than that ( when I switch my van off petrol ,before I switch the lpg on ,  it will run for at least half a mile , if not a mile before running out what’s in the carb )

That is exactly as I do it all the time, my concern is if I DONT press the acc pedal it will keep turning over but not fire, hot or cold, it's not a case of then pressing the pedal to the floor and starting it I will just turn over, the battery is good and I will spin on the starter for ages

No need to replace the cone filter , just wash it through

yes plugs , rotor arm dissy cap definitely, leads I wouldn’t think would be part of this
carb service kits are available from BW , but you may find just cleaning , lubricating the pivots and moving parts and making sure it’s all shiney and no air leaks will solve it

A squirt of carb cleaner directly into top of carb will help too. Remove pancake and get a pal to rev engine (l mean really rev the nuts off it when warm) while spraying. Engine will falter a little. But thats the reason for high revs. So it does not stall. And its sucking in huge volumes of air too, helping to remove carbon and dirt from carb.

That's more like the "Italian tune-up", which burns off the carbon and lacquer in the combustion chamber. Be careful how other people may interpret "revving the nuts off it"...Image
