Cold Carb. This should be closed but it isn’t or wasn’t should I say. Still checking for air leaks.

Isn't that why you depress the accelerator once on cold start up to reset the choke? or am I thinking of something else?
 

You are correct, depress the accelerator & it closes.

So, borrowed a carb., runs like a dream. So it is not an air leak.

However, initially it also struggled & stalled; why, low fuel, very low fuel. I've had this issue before, when I'm down to <5L it struggles for fuel pressure I assume. This does stack up, not enough fuel, air trying to compensate & over compensating.

So, filled it up with fuel on borrowed carb., seems fine. I'll run it for a bit; then swap my carb back on and I reakon it'll be ok.

(Thanks to Wilbur for borrowed carb., soon to go on his new singlecab - so a good run will do it good in preparation)

Consensus to where Pierburg air/fuel mixture screw should be, for when I put my carb back on? It's been moved so much now, I don't now what's right..

3.5 turns anti-clockwise from closed?

Seems a decent chance that it's the latter rather then the former.

Easy to remove & clean, at least on a weber, don't know about those Pierburgs

I seem to remember 3.5 turns from elsewhere, itchyfeet will have a post, or James Akers website will have the answer

Good shout, I was leaning towards blocked jets too, I'll clean them before putting it back on & check out james' site.

2.75 turns out for air/fuel mixture screw on James Akers' ebay rebuild carb.

Blocked jet, reduced fuel, weak mixture, more advance required.

Nice easy fix, but you'll have to finalise the fuel and timing all over again

All fixed, timing, mix, idle.

Running like a swiss clock again.

Summary; low fuel + blocked jet.

It’s been an absolute pleasure driving the bus this week. Purring like a kitten. Best service it’s ever had.
