Laptop or phone ?

Laptop comes up with the green bar "Images uploading"

Then the bar disappears

Then the code for the image appears in the message box

Can I ask again about the bleed rail? Full hot flow at every hose and junction?

That should be a help.

Does that pipe stay cold, or does it get hot, and then when the thermostat opens go cold again. Bit of a daft question, but I wanted to make sure I understood what you posted earlier.

Hopefully someone with a 2.1DJ can confirm that the hoses to the bleed rail are correct. They may be. but what you have doesn't appear to agree to the diagrams I have looked at.

I shall check the bleed rail today.

Yes that hose gets hot but then goes stone cold.. Not cool. Then it overheats.

What could confirm head seal for sure?

That's proper wierd and indictaes more than one issue I think.

A sniff tester on the coolant gases is probably the best way to see if the compresiion seals have gone. I don't have one of those, but I do have a compression leak tester

Bleed rail first, anything else Andrew ?

Well I have seen it before, several times, where an engine can tick over all day, or free rev, with fan cutting in and out, no leaks and no air. But take it down the road, and anything from 5 to 50 miles later you get the red flashing low coolant light, and your top up tank overflowing out the top vent.
Is this similar? Is the top up tank level rising above the filler cap? It's a bit odd for that main return hose to go stone cold, as any combustion gases leaking into the coolant would usually flow back to and accumulate in the pressure tank (and/or radiator). It appears it can't do that, and that's why I ask about the bleed rail. If that were blocked anywhere it might cause the airlock to build at the stat instead. Without contact with hot liquid the stat will close, making things worse. That's the reason for the top bleed hose on the stat housing. It MUST have flow to bleed effectively. Does it get hot as soon as the stat opens?

Sorry been busy at work. Just had whipped the star out to check again and it appears it isn't working now.. Doesn't open in cup of boiling water!

Just checked a couple junctions on the bleed rail.. Although its cold.. No trace of coolant in it at all.

I'll get it warm and check again later tonight.

Yes it's sounds similar, even cold.. The bleed rail should have coolant in surely.. That needs investigating.

Investigate the bleed rail first....... the good news is that it's beginning to look like you have a blockage, so potentially not an expensive fix.

I would be tempted to drain all the coolant off and give the system a flush through with water from a hosepipe before you start putting heat into it again. (re-use the coolant though, it's still fresh)

If the new stat isn't working put the old one back in, unless you can get another from ECP quickly.

Have you opened the bleed screw on the radiator as opposed to the thermostat housing ?

Did you give the van a run yesterday or think better of it ?

Would be tempted to disconnect the bleed rail , block all the orifices except the end and blow either hose piped water or compressed air through , then block the opposite end and unblock each outlet at a time to ensure it’s not blocked ......

Tomorrows job then, another flush, flush bleed rail out if I can.. Put the old stat back in which I've tested and it works!

Should of done that before buying a new one 🙄

No I didn't go anywhere in van yesterday, better not cause myself any further problems.

are we sure that this
Image
isn’t causing issues , are we sure it hasn’t got a build up inside where it’s obviously restricts the flow ?
