Deffo not working for me
Thus is what happens when you put oil rings against spring in place according to Grant instructions. I need to space rings out further to not get caught in sleeve cut out.

I can't make sense of that picture, it looks like there is a huge gouge missing from the piston. Can you take one from a bit further away ?

Ah yes, I see your issue now. The last ones I did with that set up were AA Performance, and I set them all at 12 and 6 o'clock alternately. So top ring at 12 o'clock as per VW/Bentley, 2nd at 6, first oil scraper 12, spring ring join at 3 or 9, 2nd scraper at 6.
That way nothing pops out the cylinder cutouts. They went in easily first time with a gentle but firm push.

Ah, I get it now :)

Go to a different time zone

1 & 7, or 2 & 8

I believe the rings rotate in use anyway

That's kind, but it was Andrew that identified the issue ;)

Back to this. More scraping and cleaning out of piston oil cut out allowed me fully close ring compressor.
Im going to place rings as per Grant instructions
First comp at 12. Second comp at 6. Spring ring over gudgeon pin and the two scapers either side to miss cylinder cut out.

Barrels honed the RD250 way. By hand with P280. Washed in petrol afterwards.
What about the upper wear lip?

Looking nice & clean now :ok

Just one thing....... and I haven't got one I can look at for now, but is that a number 1 in blue on the piston ?

If it is, then that looks like the left crankcase half to me
