A mate of mine had to cut a big hole in his wheelhouse roof to change his engine! People don't usually look that far ahead when fitting out, usually the boat has been sold on by the time an engine out is needed.
Oh so true

Would some good person verify for me the best location of piston rings gap in location to each other as seen when sleeve is refitted.
I understand oil ring gap at top. What about compression rings though? Lower ring at bottom of piston and top ring gap same as oil one?
Any preference for position of gudgeon circlip?
Regards

120 degrees apart for me, but I see the logic for 180 degrees
Retaining circlip doesn't matter on a type 4 engine as far as I can remember, other engines I am working on there is a right position, but they are rings rather than circlips

Thanks Stesaw.
Ive been reading through lots of itchylinks etc. But started to get brain fade. Probably over thinking too much as there seems so many things to remember.
I will set oil and 1st compression rings top. 2nd comp ring bottom
Circlip gap position preference?

Thanks so much

Righto. Had a read through Haynes and instructions that come with Grant Piston rings, and am getting very confused. Ive never been this deep before with a wasserboxer. My normal ring positioning was always dictated by a peg in ring groove.
The oil ring comes in three parts. The expander and a steel rail in top and bottom.
The Haynes manual says top and bottom. Yet instructions with piston rings read thus...

Three part rings are different to standard VW rings so forget about Haynes.
Three part rings have differential spacing within them too, I haven't turned the lappy on it's side, but normal approach is fit the expander, then top & bottom rings, each of them being 120 degrees from each other.

Or not. Follow the Grant instructions, abutted ends of the springy expander ring above either gudgeon pin hole, then top and bottom thin rail with gaps 1-2" left and right of the expander join.
A bit like this.
