Stalling after throttle release

Post by DoubleOSeven »

^^ Not it didn’t :(

Engine had warmed up and off choke. Stalling whilst driving and back firing too. Any ideas, welcomed.

Ran out of fuel possibilities so moved onto electrical and this is what I found. The centre broke off whilst cleaning it, was on by a thread. It’s a kind of relief, in a way.

Stalling after throttle release

Post by DoubleOSeven »

Oh well, let’s summarise the costs delivered: carburettor vacuum unit £50.32, choke pull-down unit £25, breather tower £60.86, fuel pump and fuel filter £20.32 = £156 + rotor arm.

Engine has been flawless for 6 years, can’t complain.

Until the next episode..thanks for listening and your input too.

Borrowed rotor arm off my Mk2. Still not fixed. Starts and stalls straight away. Coil primary & secondary ohms ok. King lead good too.

Dear me, such dedicated investigation and still no result.
All I can add from experience is an air leak is a bugger to find.
It certainly reads like one.
Or certainly a weak mixture, which has been checked I assume.

I haven't seen the brake booster and distibutor mentioned as they also run on vacuum.

Going from my recent experience fiddling with my van, I was getting stalling and it wouldn't idle right, checked vaccum lines all OK, Fuel lines were OK and fuel filter. Cold starts were a pain in the a*** but that was the choke closing itself fully, so a quick adjustment and that was sorted.

I had never checked my timing since owning the van which is about a year ago. Bought a timing light, turned out my timing was out by a few degrees, Now the van runs fine and starts everytime.

Stalling after throttle release

Post by DoubleOSeven »

Thanks guys. I won’t give up. I was aiming for the distributor next. It was new 6 years ago. Hall sender?? Checked the timing ok. When it stopped it wouldn’t start. Left it for 5 minutes then used starter in gear to clear the cylinders. Then it started. Float chamber because it’s flooding??

Just whizzing through these posts I didn't see any mention of the possibility that air is getting drawn into the tank side of the fuel feed which might only be a problem at tick over RPM.
I say this as my first van - an 1,100 cc side valve Fordson wooden bodied "shooting Brake" would stop (I though at the time) due to vaporisation at the fuel pump which I could cure by giving the fuel tank the kiss of life and myself a clown mouth. I never really got to the bottom of it though.

As an amusing aside there was no MOT in those heady days and the rod brakes needed a knees to chin pedal travel and you could hear the multitude of slack rod pivot bearings and mechanical equalisers taking up to initiate braking just before the pedal hit the floor. Plus I had to wiggle the steering wheel after a tight bend else I wouldn't be ale to open the rear doors as the body framework had wood worm.

I nearly killed the driving test chap as a giant drum of horse hoof brown glue (from my dads' business) rolled into him on the emergency stop and shot the temporary passenger seat -  an armchair with the legs cut off, complete with tester under the dashboard.

I guess he passed me in case he should get me on a re-test. :rofl

It sounds to me that it could be the Hall Sender failing as I’ve had the same symptoms. I’ll try to find the post on it for you.

Sometimes the bus would start fine and then as I got to a junction and released the clutch it would just stall. Changed pretty much everything (bar the dizzy) but then it conked out a few miles from home and had to get the AA out.

He put a spark plug tester on and found it was only sparking intermittently. A change in dizzy sorted the problem and it’s never returned (touches wood).

I have spare dizzy I’m happy to post out to you to see if this resolves the problem, but it’s from a DG and I’m not sure if there’s a difference between the two.

While your checking the Dizzy, have a look at the advance vac unit on the side to make sure it's holding a vac. I had a firestorm of issues that threw up similar results to you and that was just one of the problems I found.

Good luck.
