Fuel overflow or spill?

So while filling up my van today at a petrol station, I was filling the tank right up and it didn't click off right I tried to get a bit more in it splurted out,

the problem came when I pulled forward to fill the LPG, there was a big puddle of fuel under the van I looked under and it was dripping out quite fast from the tank area, obviously, I thought I was something I did while chaining fuel lines yesterday but the fuel came from higher up (top of the tank) it stopped after a couple of seconds.

drove it across car park wiped it down and no more seemed to come out, a few laps of the car park and it stayed dry so I drove home and no more has come out, checked at home and it was as dry as in the car park, what I did notice was this the joiner to the filler cap is knacked but it seamed like fuel was coming from the top of the tank, pipe seamed dry which is confusing part ?.

It's very common to have leaks from the upper surface of the tank. It's moulded around the stuff that runs front to rear (gear selector mech, handbrake cables, water pipes to rad if water cooled), there's effectively a valley for water to collect in. The original tanks were very well made and protected, but a tank could be 40 years old by now. Also, the crossover/vent pipes running east-west over the tank can perish or get split unions. It's not difficult to drop the tank, basically 2 bolts for the retaining straps and removing the filler pipe.

Agreed! That is plain dangerous. Get it replaced

Hmm. It's actually very unlikely to be the problem. If you look at the pic, you will see a bypass/equaliser below the (admittedly quite badly) corroded collar. Fuel would drain away down this before reaching the damaged part. His problem is lower down, I would say - and will still be there after replacing the collar.

The rubber probably disintegrated where the pipe enters the tank. If you want to be thorough drop the tank and check all the rubber parts.

the filler screw neck screws are still soaking in WD40, I really don't want to wreck them so the job is on hold.

With a full tank leaks can occur around vent/breather pipes so I'd look there too.

I had this issue, I took the tank out and the beather pip rubbers were gone and so was the filler collar. I ended up rubbing all down cleaning Painting new pipes and rubbers seals sender unit the lot, didnt cost much just took a little time.

As said may be the breathers, filler needs replacing too.  Im not far away just removed a good tank and a parts Ill be selling when I get time to list, drop a message if you need any bits

Keith, yes that was me! didn't end up much good so they in my shed,

I'll have a look at the tank soon but the screws on the filler cap are really stuck and I obviously don't want to have to drill them,
