Replacing wiper spindle

Post by burnzdog »

Hi all,

Just took the top of the wiper spindle off by over tightening. Before I go into this is there anyway to replace the spindle without having to remove the dash? its a LHD syncro

Many thanks

which side ?, off side maybe possible, nearside probably won't be as access will be awful with fusebox, dash and wiper motor all in the way, someone else had the same problem recently and I was able to supply him the spindle on its own but he was struggling to refit it, have a look, maybe lower down here or in electrical see if he ever sorted it without taking the dash out

Hi Aidan thanks for responding, its the driver side so i'm guessings its going to be awkward to try and replace. I'll have a look at the other thread.

I think this is the the thread, looks like dash may not be too troublesome. Is it possible to change just the spindle? I'm assuming the ball joint is going to a bugger to prize off.

as you can see from the picture in the other thread the left side spindle is attached to the motor plate and to both linkages so you will probably need to take the whole mechanism out as he did to do the repair
left side lhd spindle is 251 955 215, I think classic parts have run out of them so won't be easy to find suppliers who have stock now and they will be priced accordingly, probably easier to buy a complete set from Mick at VW NW or put up a wanted

right side is 251 955 216 , Scholfields have that one https://www.alanhschofield.com/ourparts ... 55216.html

Brickwerks have one:
https://www.brickwerks.co.uk/t3-parts/b ... -left.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and heritage https://www.heritagepartscentre.com/uk/ ... t-t25.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

So if i get the whole unit out you thinks its possible to replace just that part?

Not sure if this is the same part but I had success tapping a new thread into the wiper spindle body and bolting the wiper on from the outside, as per https://www.gowesty.com/tech-article-details.php?id=145" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Don't know if that's the same thing, but might be another option.

sorry my mistake the wiper mechanism is reversed so you are doing the same job as the previous thread replacing the lone spindle behind the dashpod, I supplied him the spindle complete with the bracket that bolts to the dash so all he had to do was extract the old one from the linkage and press the replacement into the linkage and put it all back together.
The two lugs on the new replacement spindle need to be deformed to be rivetted or possibly held with starlock washer clips that push on to fix the spindle to the mount, I don't know how hard that is to do, depends on the material and diameter

Good used complete spindle with mount will be less work overall

Thanks Aidan,

Yeah makes sense. Is it possible to buy the mount? Atleast I can get that fitted with new spindle ready to go in.

the mount 251 955 209 is still available from classic parts, you could ask brickwerks to get you one, surprised they don't stock it tbh since they have the spindle, or you reuse your existing one, grind off the rivetted ends and fit the replacement, I'd be checking with Mick at VW NW if he can sell you the correct spindle used as that will come complete ready to go, but it must be the left side lhd one

look he's got a complete lhd set up on ebay https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Vw-T25-wiper ... Sw4i5elz-u
