What size is the fuel pipe from tank to filter?

Big lumps of metals and spanners. Including servicing and fluids.

What size is the fuel pipe from tank to filter?

Post by Swebby »

Just replacing the fuel lines, thought it was 5.5mm either side of the filter but looking at what is there it looks like a 13.5mm between the tank and the filter?

Depends on the tank, injection tanks are bigger outlet .

It isn't an injection engine.

Ok looked at the writing on the hose COHline 2240 seems to be a 13.5 outer diameter 7.5mm bore. It suggests it is ECO proof up to E15.

Perhaps I might just keep that and just replace the filter?

E D I T
Aha same as the hose sent from Brickwerks won't bother replacing that then!

Just the ones in the engine to do then.

If I just replace the filter and keep the outlet pipe high should I need to drain the tank?

Not if you are quick, or clamp the pipe between .
If you undo the pipes in the engine bay first you will remove the vacuum in the pipes and cause less siphoning ,
I changed a filter and lost about a cup full .

Glad somebody has brought this up as in the process of doing the same to mine. Do not want to order the wrong size hoses as there does appear to be a lot to choose from especially the first bit between the tank and filter which according to some articles are a different size to that on the other side of the filter. Are GSF hoses any good, saw a previous article or wiki information stating they were not up to the mark.

This is a good site to look at
https://vwt25.blog/2016/05/04/replacing-the-fuel-lines/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Get your fuel lines from Brickwerks.

On my 1.9DG all the hoses are 5.5mm except for the one from the tank to the filter which is 7.5mm and a small section of 7.5mm from the Pierburg Carb to a reducer to the 5.5mm in the engine bay as described on the website.

I carry a short length of rubber fuel pipe with a bung Jubily Clipped into one end primarily so I can drop the tank without getting the dregs all over the place.

Found this interesting join between the 7.6mm and 5.5mm. Replaced with a proper reducer and new pipes now.
Bloody difficult trying to get the 5.5mm onto the fuel lines! I am hoping I got enough of it in. How much should I aim to get in? Just enough for the clip to tighten on? Can you use some Vaseline to slip them on?Image

You can buy them lubricated nowadays.

Never use vaseline on rubber. Use fuel. New rubber can be softened by squeezing several times with a pair of pliers.
