1984 There seems to be differing opinions whether spring compressors can be used changing front springs, any advice appreciated

I changed mine without needing spring compressors.
Factory 30mm lower springs though.

You can if you are prepared to release wishbone balljoint, trackend balljoint and shock lower bolt. Then you might manage to slide it out.

2wd with three bolt radius rod fitting you only have to remove radius rod and lower damper bolt which allows lower control arm down enough to remove spring, you only need spring compressor if you are trying to do the job without removing radius rod, you may find lower control arm mount bush is seized on mounting bolt though so be prepared to remove lower control arm and replace mount and bolt
