Plastic coolant pipes 1.9 dg 1984 petrol

Post by TONYT25T25 »

Looks as if one of my plastic coolant pipes/metal inserts to the front on my camper maybe damaged/decayed. I notice a small leak which I hoped would be repaired by using a new jubilee clip as the existing one was rusty. Placed with new one bit still a bit of leakage after running to full temperature. Added a further clip on the other side of the coolant pipe lip which sealed it a bit better. Only loosing about quarter a thimbleful if that, looking at wiki and other reports wondering how long I have. As any body repaired the pipes in situ, ie are the metal inserts removable and replacing if this is the cause. Tks Tony :?:

Flow or return pipe? IIRC flow goes to higher part of rad with straight rubber hose. And returns out of rad bottom through 90 degrees bend in hose.
Hard to say what to do really. Is the rubber pipe to radiator in good condition. Thats where mine started to leak first.
I have a genuine VW coolant pipe for sale if needed?

Return pipe from rad, left hand pipe looking from front of vehicle. Leak is between where hose attaches to plastic piping at front of vehicle. Unsure of condition of hose/pipes until I remove/separate both. Difficult access as you know, trying to avoid replacing plastic pipe due to access etc and dropping fuel tank. Does anybody know diameter of the plastic and rubber parts. :?: Thanks for offer of spares not sure what I need yet.

I had a read up on the pipes at New a Year as I had to replace my earlier metal pipes. You can get new inserts but according to Brickwerks they are expensive and hard to get hold of. I replaced mine with just slightly dropping the tank and resting it on a block of wood, depends if you have a metal pipe bracket under the tank. Mine were just before and after the tank with a cable tie in the middle holding the heater pipes. Metal 32mm plastic 38.

Tks again, unsure of condition of inserts until I take a look, as problem maybe with hose not plastic pipes, pipes on vw heritage are about £75 each but until I remove existing ones not sure what to order. Not going far att due to travel restrictions/nothing open. Tempted to try a fix using piping and rubber hoses without lip, does anybody know if a good seal can be made with plastic and rubber hoses without a lip, ie the bit that the hose passes over before being clamped with a jubilee clamp or other.

The aftermarket new (old stock in loft for many years) return hose between rad and coolant pipe had a metal insert/strengthener.
It never sealed properly. So took it out and put old one back in.
Brickwerk coolant pipes come in two parts for easier fitting.
