1.9 DG won't run on idle

Post by Buggin1966 »

Hi,

Van has been off the road for a year or so and I have been working on it to get it ready for MOT, starts and runs fine then when choke goes in it dies, starts again but wont tickover unless Im blipping the throttle.

Have checked the solenoid and that's ok,
Vacuum hoses are ok
Have sprayed carb cleaner around bottom of the carb but no change in revs
Taken out the idle jet screw, cleaned and put back
Adjusted the throttle stop and still cuts out as soon as foot off the pedal

(have also changed the carb as I have a space and it does not make a difference,,still same issue)

Anyone got any ideas????

Many thanks, Emma

I would check that the vacuum advance on the distributor is still holding a vacuum. Test it by sucking! If the diaphragm inside has a hole it will have trouble idling after choke comes off as the timing won’t be retarded at idle.

Hi,

Try the primary/idle jet itself. remove pancake and you will see the top of the jet, get a good fitting flat blade screwdriver and unscrew it. This is the usual culprit for
me. Make sure you can see through it coz sometimes cleaning or blowing doesn't always shift the blockage.

Ignore all that, just re-read and see you changed carbs, so possible fuel supply??

Got the same issue with 1.9 DG . Due to Lockdown first couple of short runs out for a few month ran fine. Yesterday fine for ten minutes stopped and started at a shop then next junction cut out when i took my foot off accellerator. Will not idle at all.
Had a full service at the end of last summer.
Fuel pump replaced early last year but a cheap just campers one.
All vacuum hoses replaced last year.
Nothing seems obvious.

Most likely corrosion in float chamber from standing idle. When you start it up it sucks this crud into the jets and partially blocks one or more. You can blow it out from the top with an airline or carb cleaner and it'll run ok again for a little while, but splitting the carb and cleaning it out is the only fix.

Another DG, rested up for winter, now won't idle. It runs on choke but gives up once its warm. Time to fit the spare engine.

I had good success on this a couple of years ago by removing the jets and cleaning them.

It doesn't take much to block them.

Sent it to Bromyard for a refurb. She would struggle to do 55mph, today I hit 75 and there was more available(in my defence, I have a kph speedo and didn't believe my mental maths, having never been up that end before). I stopped accelerating because even with new shocks and springs, she felt a bit lively...

I used to SORN mine for a couple of months over winter, but still start it up to recirculate fuel, oil etc, I don't SORN it any more after receiving advice on here that these vehicles like to be driven, if you imagine joints, bushes, springs, shocks etc sitting idle for a while it must cause problems, take them for a weekly drive at least even if only to do the shopping.
