I have the gear to do the valve seats
All 3 angles too

All interesting reading, gents - appreciate all the input. It appears that the next stage is to examine (and post a few pictures) of the corresponding valve seat and also further investigation of the cracks.

It’s now a given that a new set of valves are required- this seems a reasonable thing to do under the ‘Beginners’ title without breaking the bank.

I also happen to have two ‘spare’ heads that were acquired for free when I was donated an engine - I have no idea of the shape they are in but they potentially provide another option.

Hopefully I’ll get to check things over this afternoon but currently have no windows in the front of the house so I guess this might just take priority......

you just neex to swap out the bad valve, don't need to swap them all.

Cant paul as mate has borrowed for his winter engine refresh

You need to get your priorities straight and get on with that engine !!

Just reading through some old rebuild post.
What happened Snowmark? Nothing for 8 months?

A new (old) house - I am in the middle of a complete house renovation and currently living without a kitchen or bedrooms for the kids! There is light at the end of a very long tunnel and, fingers crossed, I will be back on this rebuild in a couple of months......
Think I’ll have to reread it a couple of times to remind me what’s going on.

Hi I can see this is an old thread, but can anyone give a realistic price for rebuilding a 1990 petrol engine 1.9 I have two plugs getting oily and have been told it could be the lifter seal? (forgive me if I have that wrong)Ihave been able to do a lot of the other grunt work on the van but engines are beyond my capabilities as well as limited tool collection

Any advice appreciated 

Just an after thought I can see a replacement engine costs around £2600 so how much would it cost in labour to swop one out?

You might be better starting a new thread for that, as it's not really contributing anything relevant to this (very long term) rebuild thread.

I'm just in the process of doing a rebuild on my own 1.9DG Waterleaker so I found this really interesting.
Gave me some good pointers on issues to look for and some good tips and hacks. 
Thanks for your efforts - it must have taken twice as long with the photos
