Lower ball joint clip

Post by waltraud »

I'm putting a new early O/S hub carrier /upright on and was going to add a new ball joint. But the one in my spare is good so am thinking to keep it. Can you replace the bottom circlip on the rubber with the (early) lower arm attached?

Yes, the larger coil type circlips can be wound on as though winding a thread onto a bolt. Seat one end in the groove and be careful not to dig the end into the rubber as you wind it using the other end.

I have tried the same method with the smaller spring clip (not the snap ring) on track rod end dust covers but with the the smaller radius and lower flex they seem to dig into the rubber all too easily. If anyone has a method or tool for fitting these I'd love to hear it.
For the upper snap ring clips I don't use a tool - just fit them in place on the new boot and slide them on with the boot.
