1.9 dg 1987 only get 10ltr coolant back in ?
Hi everybody
I have completed a coolant flush and refill, I used ready mixed g48 as needed the bus on the road, however after opening rad bleed screw and removing both screws under engine, after running it up to temp with rad flush, on refilling I was only able to get 10ltr back in. Heat at top of Rad and heat in cab no air in system .
My question to you clever people as I believe 16.5 ltr should be in the system,
Where is the 6.5 ltr hiding ?
I thought maybe the heater matrix was not draining, but I have that set to hot, and I would think that might account for 1tr or so.
The rad is the highest point and the engine being the lowest , if I open one drain plug until the fluid stops I still get a little more once opening the second.
if its not possible to get all the coolant out i will go the concentrated route as I know I can get 8ltrs in and then top up
to get a 50-50 mix
Confused
Chris

I always put the 50% in then top up with water never worrying then about how much has gone in.(or how much was left behind originally) I would do it the same on those funny engines also.I have never understood the point of ready mixed - I thought that was concrete! One good run and it will be mixed well enough.

You should always premix coolant. If unmixed coolant gets hot it turns to jelly and clogs your coolant passages.

It does hide well. I think you have to pick it up, turn it over and shake it to get it all out.

I remove the bottom hose from the rad and there is still at least 8 litres left. I think there are drain points on each cylinder head but I don't much fancy removing them and not sure wether it would make much difference.

I'll have to double check next time round but when I changed coolant I got around 12-14ltrs out using a decent shop vac.
First go round through the header tank and then when no more was flowing I dropped bottom hose of radiator and put the vac on that hose (not the radiator itself)
Not knowing the age, or more importantly spec of the coolant in the van I then filled with water and repeated process a coupel of times before fininlly filling up with correct stuff.

if you don't open the bleed screw in the rad before draining down the rad stays mostly full especially if you drain down at the engine end and with the thermostat shut you won't be flushing the rad unless you do it at the front, ideally to flush the rad you'd disconnect both hoses at the front and then run a hose both ways through the rad till it runs clean

I do the same never had any problems, never get all the water out after flushing.

I always have this after putting an engine back in, the water hides in the rad and in the lower stretches of tubes. I drained mine to get the engine out the other day and drained 11 litres.
