Nice write up Itchy - I think I may be following it very soon.

I found this thread as a result of searching for a problem on mine.

I just noticed a 'squeeky' like noise/action when I depress the clutch peddle. Then I noticed a very small amount of fluid on the mat at the base of the steering column, its oily.
I haven't done a thorough inspection but I checked the fluid level - which was fine
My thoughts are 'something has not improved with age' and needs replacing.

Is it a fair chance the master cylinder is a gonna or is there a more obvious fault to check first?

Brakes and Clutch work fine, nothing has been worked on to disturb anything

Sounds like you are thinking of clutch master cylinder, this is brake master.

my clutch pedal on the tin top is very squeaky too but I don't think it's anything to do with hydraulics, could be wrong though

have a look where the fluid is coming from, brake switches are common leak points.

clutch master is down low by pedals, it's fed from the same top up tank so hose may be leaking too.

My logic stinks! squeaky clutch so change the brake cylinder.

Fitted a new one of these today, and was surprised by how tight I had to do up the nearest switch in the cylinder, after reading a few times about not overtightening. Never came across a tapered thread before? Eighth of a turn each time a drip appeared on the exposed threads, until it stopped. The furthest switch didn't need as much nipping up(a deep 24mm socket on extension bar can be used from below for that one, in situ!) Anyway, all in and bled (just from the two brake line connections on the cylinder) seems nice and firm.

I replaced mine recently also and had to replace a leaking hose from reservoir to clutch master cylinder. I was told the hose I got was okay for brake fluid but now I have seen its sweating fluid and distorting the rubber.

Does anyone know what sort of rubber hose I should use for this?

Brickwerks sell the correct hose.
