Rear suspension trailing arm- Allowed to be welded?
I know this might be a daft question. Are these allowed to be welded?
Seen a very small hole starting in mine on the bottom.
Another T25 owner said to me once a while ago, they weren't allowed to be welded.
Is this true?

Brickwerks sell a repair plate for the spring housing so it must be acceptable
I think people mean if you have any major rust it's not safe but a tiny hole should be fine ( and the mot tester won't know), worth checking that tiny hole isn't one of many, it's your safety afterall.

As Itchy said, small hole should be fine. Clean it all up, treat it and repaint. Don't forget to dose the inside, preferably with Dynax.

Cheers many thanks. I was thinking of just filling it in and doing an underseal treatment!
MOT time next week and they only meant to tap aren't they & not prod!

If a joke has already appeared on the outside what do you think the condition is like internally? Wouldn't fancy my chances on the motorway to be honest but I appreciate the size of the job once you start replacing complete arms.
Why would the glass be anything other than half full?

don't underseal is my reccomendation because you need to monitor condition.
You should prod, if you prod and the hole gets bigger then don't bury your head in the sand.
If you hide for an mot ypu may forget to fix it later.
you started talking about welding now you talk of filling and underseal, not the same.

Re: Rear suspension trailing arm- Allowed to be welded?
I have proded around with a screwdriver and there were no more holes.
I'll put it in for MOT and see any recomended course of action!
Thanks for the replies

If it's a small hole drill it round and paint it.
A rusty hole in a structural position is a fail.
A round drilled hole is not a rusty hole so its not a fail.
I have a few nice round drilled holes in the body and they are not a fail for a good reason, when round and painted they wont get worse.

Re: Rear suspension trailing arm- Allowed to be welded?
Unless the MOT rule book has changed in the last few years (don't do cars anymore). Pressed steel suspension components can be welded. But cast components cannot.
So rear arms can be repaired and it shouldn't cause issues at MOT time. However be aware they are a highly stressed part of the vehicle and any repair should be to a high standard.

Everything can be fixed with the right attitude........

Just for info now, as it's after the lord mayor's show, but this is the MOT wording:
"Welded repairs to highly stressed components such as steering/suspension arms, rods, levers etc are not normally acceptable, other than where the component is made up of sections that are welded together. In these cases the repair should appear to be as strong as the original design."
