JX TD. Any ideas?

Post by VRS »

Bought this as a basket case on the bay and A-framed it back from Glasgow to Cambridgeshire. Seller had no knowledge about it and its been stood since 2009, well, thats when it was last mot'd/taxed. Fuel pipe was disconnected so rigged up a fuel supply and it started pretty much immediately. However it was billowing out smoke, revving a bit too fast and would not accelerate at all. Have gone through timing etc and currently the head is off, appears to be nowt wrong there and also the turbo, looks ok to me but I'm no expert. Just 50 years of playing with engines like. Waiting on new head bolts at the moment but probably stick it back together next week and try it again without turbo on and keep fingers crossed but I have a feeling nowt will have changed. So, anyone had a similar occurance? No way I'm gonna give up on it, only superficial rust and its a Devon pop-top. 165km. B reg, but wasnt registered in UK until '89 so unsure of the exact year. It has the mechanical tappets. (that changed in 85 I believe). Anyway, over to you guys.....

Possibly injector(s) stuck open, causing hosing, poor atomisation (smoke) and no fuel back pressure in the pump so won't rev. Or the pump's knackered, so it was parked up back when it wasn't considered worth fixing?

I had the same symptoms when rigging up my mTDI for the first time. Fuel pump was knackered.

You need to get in touch with reg cheeseman - you should be able to find contact details elsewhere. He rebuilds a lot of injection pumps for people on here for very reasonable rates.

I have sent an email this afternoon to what I think is his address so hopefully it can get sorted. If I remember rightly the smoke was a light grey colour. Thanks again. Vince.

Just to add my bit. Reg gave me an invaluable amount of info on JX pumps just last week.
