When to replace a cambelt?

Big lumps of metals and spanners. Including servicing and fluids.

When to replace a cambelt?

Post by Skyegirl »

I have recently become proud owner of a 1986 yr VW T25 Hi- top camper engine turbo diesel 1.6. Engine was reconditioned over 10 years ago and done about 38000 miles since. engine is running fine . Should I consider replacing cambelt and if so what is likely cost? Local garage in London quoted £ 300-400 . What are consequences if I don't replace cambelt?

Have searched wiki and tech archives and couldn't find answers to this exact questions but apologise if I have missed something.
Grateful for advice!
Thanks

Welcome Skyegirl.
Are you a refugee from the misty isle?
£300-400 sounds a bit steep. :o
I got a very awkward one done on my wife's Kia recently for abt £150.

Try using a male friend to ask at the next garage - it sounds like that garage has added "sheila" tax. :D It depends upon whether the garage is used to these vans I should think. Hopefully someone who has had one done at a garage can come up with what they paid, doing things ourselves most of us lose track of these prices.

Thanks to all for your helpful replies. Seems
The consensus is to replace the cambekt but
to shop around for cost. Many thanks!

Fixed that for you. :ok I'm hardly a new owner but the cambelt is not something I'd feel 100% confident replacing yet.

To the OP, if helps if you can add your location in the country to your profile as someone might be able to suggest a good garage near to you.

Needs changing based on age...as others have said.
Pretty basic even by SOHC standards, parts are cheap and for anyone in the know this is a 90 minute job max.
£150 all in sounds about right.
