Engine keeps dying

Post by matthew13 »

I have a 1983 2ltr petrol. A couple of weeks ago my camper ran out of fuel and hasn't been the same since. Now everytime i start it it either dies straight away or it starts and then runs for a few minutes before slowly dying on me. It has a full tank of fuel now and i have changed the fuel filter but the problem still persists. I fitted a new fuel pump about 4 months ago which works fine, so i don't think it can be this. Can anyone suggest anything??

Was the filter just after the tank or in the engine bay? The reason i ask is because a lot dont realise there is a filter near the tank. There is also a filter in the carb. Its worth checking this out.

thanks for the reply, the filter was just after the tank. Where abouts in the carb is the filter, bit of a novice about these things!! Do you think running out of petrol could have caused this problem?

There's a small cone filter in the inlet pipe to the carb. Pull off the fuel pipe and use a small screw to gently wind it out.

No filter in the twin carbs of an air-cooled engine.

Have you checked the fuel filter after the tank? If you ran out of fuel then it may have sucked through crud and now be blocked. Mine was gross and allowed enough fuel through but would cut out.

Perhaps also an air block - maybe try starting it with the fuel cap off to get it clear?

no not really. The longest i've managed to drive it for was about 5 mins yesterday, but today it will only run for a few seconds then dies again!!! Could the fuel pump have been damaged when i ran out of fuel? Have tried taking off the fuel pipe to the carbs and cranking the engine to see how much fuel comes out, there is an initial spurt but after that nothing.

Do you get a good flow out of the tank pipe before you fit the filter? It might be the pipes inlet inside the tank has got blocked by rust & spiders ;)
