JX Starter Removal
Hi folks,
In an attempt to solve starting probs detailed elsewhere, I would like to remove my starter. It seems to be held on with just bolts into the flywheel housing (is that what it's called? The engine bit anyway!) The head of the bolts looks like this...
An 8mm Allen key is too small, and a 10mm won't go in. However with that shape I'm not convinced an Allen key is right. It looks like a 12 pointed thing would go in. Can someone who has done this on a JX point me in the right direction? From what I've read, petrols use bolt-and-nut, but I see no nut on the engine side of things...
Thanks in advance

Re: JX Starter Removal
They are 12 point spline AKA triple square bolts. A set of bits will be very useful for you t25. Easily found on Ebay or your local car accessory store. The long ones would be better for CV joint bolts.
To get the starter off you will have to release the bracket holding the clutch slave cylinder. Take out the bolt that goes into the gearbox casing lower down, then rotate the whole bracket to give the starter just enough room to come out.
When you replace the starter, you must remember to strap the two starter wires to the body of the solenoid with a big cable tie, otherwise the vibrations will cause the connection stud on the starter to break.

Re: JX Starter Removal
I removed mine without undoing the clutch bracket....it wiggles past.
Just two bolts plus the connections.

Thanks Colin, never heard of those bits. I got my CV bolts off with an Allen bit, pretty sure the weren't 12 point, if they had been I'll bet they wouldn't have rounded.
Thanks for the tip about the cable tie, and the bracket
Keith, knowing my luck, I'll need to loosen the bracket, so I'll just start out that way.

Thanks
To be fair though, I didn't have time to go to the agricultural suppliers, who are based in a tractor friendly location, which isn't that accessible to me when I'm zipping twixt Wick and Thurso. And given we are so far out of the way 2hr 30min north of Inverness, we do not too badly.
But aye, sod all...

It is a fine place, been here since 99. Only downside is that it is so far from everywhere else. But yes, a very fine place, seen by too many as that place on the way to Orkney!
