Radius Rod Removal... 3 questions

Post by fodtommo »

hi guys,

My radius rod bushes are knackered and the MOT man has said they need doing if I want to roll for another 12 months!

Had a look yesterday and had 2 questions...

1 - my rod appears to be threaded at the hub end and screws directly into the hub... most of the pics online show one that bolts on from underneath? is mine simply a later / earlier type (van is 1986)?

2 - what size are the large nuts...? bigger than anything I have to hand in the open ended spanner tray for sure!

3 - anyone know the dimensions of the steel bush that the rod goes through, im not tight but since i work for an engineering firm id prefer to make them!

Thanks everyone :ok

'86 is later so you're probably looking at an earlier set-up, can't help with dimensions but Baxter sells stainless ones which will last forever.

Nut is 24mm if memory serves.

It's the later ones that screw in not the earlier ones. I wire brushed the threads clean then put copious amounts of plus gas on it. I used an adjustable wrench on the back and a 24mm spanner on the front (after breaking it loose with an injector socket and a long bar!!) AS for the dimensions I don't know as I just ordered a pair of stainless ones for mine. I marked the position of the back nut with yellow paint to keep the angles right.

You`ll need a 27mm open ended spanner. Actually a 1 1/16 Ferguson tractor spanner is just the thing as it`s agricultural strength, strong enough to use a long extension and a big hammer on. Most vintage tractor fanatics will have one.

Just done mine, replaced all nuts with stainless ones, cost about £6 off eBay. Sleeves are part of the powerflex kit if you choose to go down that route.
Why would the glass be anything other than half full?
