Exhaust stud replacement

Post by Dazco »

I'm going to be fitting a new stainless exhaust system in the next weeks.
Is it best to use stainless studs or bolts, cap heads as replacements?

Personally I have stainless studs and nuts with just flat washers , never come undone, if you use bolts you are turning at torque the bolt against the aluminium thread so more chance to damage it.

really depends if your exhaust has easy in line access to each stud, if not you may have to use some bolts.

My studs are actually grub screws so they come with a handy internal hex to remove and insert them :ok

Steel studs x 6 with proper brass exhaust nuts, two of which can be external dia 1mm less than the other standard four, as it makes access to tightening those two up easier, what with the two tight J tubes. The last two fixings usually use bolts, again standard steel ones.
Each two years, during your major service, just wind them out and replace with new, easy job and cheap too.
If I did mine again I'd use steel studs, brass nuts but then stainless steel bolts for last two..
Just my tuppence... :ok

Itchy's point about tightening bolts up into alloy heads is valid - I'd avoid it personally especially as the studs method can't be improved upon IMHO.

I was mentioning, on the other current exhaust thread, how much I hate those 2 nuts you cannot remove without undoing the rest of the exhaust first

8mm SS Grub screws HERE

I am guessing these are suitable nuts -> Ebay link?

Oh and just to complete a shopping list, here are some 8mm SS washers -> another Ebay link
