Fuel hose problems

Post by djhammy »

HI guys about 14 months ago i replaced all my fuel hose including hard line.

After much reading on here about the best hose to use i went with SAEJ30 R9.

To my shock this hose has cracked badly and looks worse than any cheap hose i have used in the past and in such a short space of time. Had to replace all the engine bay hose quick yesterday.

I feel baffled as i assumed this was the best to use to cope with modern fuels etc.

Any thoughts?

Cheers Dave

Probably caused by the new higher levels of ethanol in fuel. They recently increased it to 10% from 5%. I've heard it caused this type of rapid degradation on the hoses. There had been a lot of talk about this, just run a search in this forum....

Also avoid pumps with E10 displayed to avoid high ethanol content.

Thanks chaps certainly has me thinking where to source my fuel.

I generally use Shell down the road from me so will need to check.

On long journeys I've filled up with Sainsburys so going to be very wary now. Maybe the higher octane is a better bet rather than standard unleaded?

Makes you wonder how other T25 owners are getting on.

I may as well buy the cheap stuff and just replace on a regular basis.

Thought so. Sorry but that's cheap rubbish from Malaysia and costs about a £1 a metre. Ask for a certificate of conformity for the R9 specification and you won't get one! We have genuine R9 specification landing on Thursday from Codan and we will of course be selling this without the VW tax :)

Hi,
I too have recently replaced my fuel hoses using R9 spec hose, from AFS.
Noting the various comments I contacted AFS and asked for their comments about early failure of R9 hose and the quality of their product. They did not take 'umbridge' and were open and up front.
The summary of their answer was as follows: They do not sell inferior quality products and C of C's are available if asked for when ordering.
For today's fuels they would only recommend their 100% Bio hose. This hose type is now original fitting on VW's, BMW's, Merc's and Scania's. It is a 'fit and forget' product.
R6, 7, 9 and 10 spec hose is still used by many and decay rate will depend on fuel type and daily amount used.
Tyres, lights, brakes, etc, etc are checked regularly- hoses should also be checked.

They also sent me a copy of the EU directive on Ethanol in fuel, it's only a page, which explains the amounts used and it's effect on vehicles, especially older ones.
If someone 'in the know' contacts me I can send them a copy for possible inclusion in Wiki.
Hope this helps,
Don
