CV Joint bolts - where to buy?

Big lumps of metals and spanners. Including servicing and fluids.

CV Joint bolts - where to buy?

Post by Jim San »

Just preparing to change the Front Inner CV Boots.

Whilst cleaning the areas I spotted that the bolts are original Allen key - and they are tight!!
Gotta buy a socket type allen fitting as I dont trust keys not to snap under that force + I fear there may be some damage or total mutilation to the heads during removal

So as I am this this stage I want to change them for the spline type but can;t find a source.
Any recommendations (I have tried Brickworx and ebay but only find Allen type).

Also, can anyone confirm the size of the bolts please? M8 x 50 ?

cheers

I bought a whole boxfull once from a bolt supplier in Coventry but they don't do small orders now. VW still sell them but at £2 a bolt, its a bit expensive that way. They need to be hardened steel thats for sure. Measuring one in my toolbox, its 55mm from under the head to the tip although I think 50's will be fine.

Search on ebay for "cv bolts vw" - you'll find more that way. The black metal ones tend to be the hardened ones I found but colour may not be the only factor.

Cheers CovKid, I thought I had covered those parameters on my search - but no

Not found any I am willing to buy yet but GSF are selling them at £5 a pop

Thats stupid money. I bought something like 50 for a fiver - excellent quality splined high-tensile bolts.

Might be worth your while hunting down proper bolt stockists rather than end-of-chain retailers. Depends where you live ofcourse but pick the nearest big city and google for bolts. These CV bolts are a common size.

In recent years I found a very small shop in a back street that does nothing but bearings. I have yet to catch him out. However its much like corner shops, if you don't use them they can't survive.

Yep totally agree. I have been searching fastener stockists. I'll be making a few phone calls tomorrow between lessons.

Other than sheer greed or an over-zealous supply chain, i fail to see how GSF can justify a fiver per bolt. Even allowing for the price of steel, thats outrageous. You can buy two for that price at VW commercial counters. Halfords are not much better on their fastener packs either and many big DIY stores charge high prices for even small bolts now. l've always gone to specialists for anything like that - for all the above reasons. Sometimes you have to buy a box full but they soon go. :D

I looked and looked at the advert to see what the Qty was! I thought for 6 it may be a bit of a good deal but I had to look at another advert for a similar bolt before I found 'single item'.

I've bought boxes of 200 before when I only need a few.

Just for anyone who's curious - here is the link:

M10

It's a shame as GSF are handy for me being only 10 miles away in Shrewsbury.

Rears are M8x47 and front inners are M8x50 due to flange spacer rings. Very surprised BW don't have them. Try searching A-series Spares in Ilkeston (lost their number) I just had 10x M8x 20 fine grade 12.9 for £1.93 + delivery.

Just go to a fastening place if nearby. They're peanuts by the box.

I cant find any fastener place that stocks them! Response every time is that they are automotive and go to main dealer!
