Engine rebuild bristol area

Post by johnfevs »

Looks like I'm going to have the engine out and at best a top end rebuild, well that's what I have been told. The engine is running on 3 cylinder and the suspect cylinder is very oily and not firing. Ive limped it along for as long as I can now it's time to get it sorted. Anyone recommend someone in the Bristol area. I'm happy to go further afield for a quality job. The engine is an air cooled flat 4 type, it's a 2 litre CU with standard solex carbs which will need checking out as well.
Anyone else had this type of work done and what sort of costs are we looking at.

Cheers, john

Hi John,

Who has diagnosed a rebuilt engine is needed? Have you had it compression tested?

The reason I say this, is that I had my van with a non-specialist. They diagnosed a 'new' engine, but the reality was a little way from their diagnosis. (they compression tested the engine and it was low on two cylinders - eventually transpires the brake servo hose was at fault (not connected!!  ))

I would take it to the specialist (whoever that maybe??) and let them totally diagnose.

Mike

Mike, that's what I am going to do, don't really want to suggest anything. 2 people have had a quick look and as there is a lot of oil everywhere it looks like the seals have gone somewhere. It's blowing oil from the exhaust so not a good sign either. Just want to get it sorted so I can enjoy next years trips without going up the slightest hill in 2nd or 1st gear

If you haven't already, have a chat with Jeff's VW Shack - not sure if they do engine rebuilds, but Jeff drives a T25, and they have plenty experience of Aircooled vw's

(website is well out of date, but they are definitely still in business!)

Update.

Van is with Jeff's VW Shack having a "new" recon engine fitted. The old one had lots of problems and all added up to make it not economical for a repair. The engine is now back in and needs some tinkering with the carbs so hopefully this can be resolved using the box of spares that he has for the old solex carbs.
Hopefully get it back next week
