Running problems

Post by johnfevs »

Following on from last weekend when I changed the fuel pump for an electric one. I thought all was fine until yesterday when I took it out it seems like it's running on 3 cylinders. I checked spark, distributer and rotor. What else can I check. One of the cylinders is blowing some oil out the exhaust so I know I have some engine issues, but I did 150 miles last weekend and all seemed ok. It's a 2.0 cu with twin solex carbs.
Cheers

Yes I suspect compression is poor on one cylinder as it's blowing some oil, number 2 plug is very oily, so suspect that's the one. Trying to limp along to the end of the summer then get it looked at. Are any of the engine oil treatments worth a try????

If the plug or lead on no.2 are failing and not firing, the un-burnt petrol will be washing the carbon off the head and making the plug look like it's oiled up. Try swapping a plug & lead with another cylinder and see if the fault moves to that cylinder. If the fault stays on no.2 then the rings might be passing oil and oiling the plug, stopping it firing.

Took out the suspect oily plug from cylinder 2 to find it looking brand new. Checked spark and looked ok. Could it be lack of fuel to this cylinder ?? Checked another plug to find as expected showing signs of heat and a bit of carbon deposits.

Now how do I check to see if fuel is getting to this cylinder??

Thanks in advance.
